Takhat From Gujarat With Lacquered Legs – 19th Century

This antique Indian coffee table dates to the 19th century and is a takhat, an Indian daybed originally used by the wealthy merchant class. The turned lacquer legs are traditional on Gujarati takhats. This style with two deep drawers shows how the presence of western empires influenced traditional Indian design in the 19th century.

Constructed from teak wood with original brass handles it would make an impressive centerpiece for a living room, conservatory, or summer house.

Takhats make perfect coffee tables.
