Painted Teak Takhat From Gujarat – 19th Century

This fabulous antique Indian coffee table is known locally as a takhat. Takhats were daybeds originally used by the wealthy merchant classes. This takhat table is from Gujarat in Northern India and dates to the early 19^th century. It is truly an excellent example of a traditional Gujarati-style takhat with beautifully faded layers of pastel paintwork and decorative carved sides.

Gujarati takhats are made from teak wood and have red lacquered legs. They are far more decorative than Northern Rajasthani takhats. They’re also wider, with a shorter, squatter leg in comparison to the more common Shekhawati takhats.
