Old Stone Lamp Niche From Gujarat – 19th Century

This carved stone Indian lamp niche from Gujarat is locally known as an alla. It dates to the 19th century and would have likely come from the entrance doorway to a wealthy merchant’s home. This example is a particularly good quality piece that features a peacock standing atop a stylised temple flanked by parrots. 

Hand carved from local stone they were normally used beside doorways with oil lamps or candles. But even without candles they look very decorative on a wall or to light a garden pathway at night
