Description

This expressive 19th-century carved teak Gangaur figure comes from Jodhpur and represents a traditional female form associated with the Rajasthani spring festival honouring Gauri, the embodiment of marital devotion and prosperity. Hand-carved from a dense block of teak, the figure retains wonderful traces of old pigment and features the distinctive elongated proportions and faceted carving style typical of folk sculptures from the region.

She is dressed in stylised traditional attire, with incised patterns decorating her skirt and distinctive long, tied hair carved neatly down her back. One arm is fully movable—a charming and rare detail often found in village carvings intended for ceremonial or domestic use. The piece has a rich, timeworn surface and a powerful presence, making it a captivating example of 19th-century Rajasthani folk art.
