Walnut Chinese Officials Hat Chair From Shanxi – 19thC

These antique Chinese chairs were known as officials hat chairs because the shape of the back was reminiscent of an officials hat. They were often made in pairs for a husband and wife.

They are usually made from elm or red elm, but examples made in walnut is also found in North China. This particular chair is made from walnut and elm.  

Hat chairs were usually placed each side of a wine or tea table and can be seen depicted in ancestor portraits and Chinese pith painting scenes.
