Carved Roheda Kharal – Opium Grinder – Ca 1920

This unusual carved wooden kharal comes from Rajasthan, India and dates to around 1920. Traditionally used for grinding and preparing opium, vessels of this type formed part of the long-established ceremonial and social use of opium in Rajasthan.

Carved from roheda wood, the kharal has a deep oval bowl supported by an integral base, with projecting handles at either end. Simple circular motifs decorate the exterior, while years of handling and use have developed a wonderfully rich, dark patina.

Pieces such as this were practical household objects and could be passed down through generations, making surviving examples an interesting part of Rajasthan’s social history.
