Painted Iron Bound Teak Chest From Gujarat – 18th Century

This iron-bound chest is from Gujarat and dates to the 18th century. It is constructed from teak wood. Most likely it was custom-made for a wealthy family to stash away dowry, family treasures, or cash from the prying eyes of extended family members. Its layers of various coloured old paint give it a ‘distressed’ finish. A sturdy iron chain prevents the lid from falling fully open.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
